3 UTR mid-round NFL Draft prospects Philadelphia Eagles should consider
By Ben Swanger
Would it be a Philadelphia Eagle’s draft class if it wasn’t punctuated by the addition of a defensive end? There isn’t an immediate need for an edge rusher, but the Eagles are always looking to add trench players.
Jonathan Garvin is a young pass rusher who has a nice frame that he could continue to grow into. At six-foot-four and 250 pounds, the Eagles could beef him up to 260 or 265. Once he fills out a little more, he has the potential to turn into a major force.
In three seasons with the Miami Hurricanes, Garvin tallied 106 total tackles, 29 for a loss, and 12.5 sacks. The sack numbers don’t stand out, but it’s been his potential that has stood out to scouts.
Based upon his productivity, one could wonder why he didn’t stay at Miami to play his senior season, but his best football lies ahead of him. Joe Marino of The Draft Network puts things this way:
"Miami defensive end Jonathan Garvin has some high-level flashes on tape that reveal an exciting skill set but they are too often marred by lackadaisical effort which reveals issues with play strength, urgency and contact balance. Garvin is a younger prospect that is far from maxed out physically which indicates there is plenty of room for him to develop. Garvin is a high-end developmental EDGE prospect that has a considerable ceiling if/when the switch flips. There aren’t any notable physical restrictions present, Garvin has to get stronger, play faster and become consistent."
If the Eagles were to bring in in Garvin, it would mean they see a young pass rusher who can flip the switch. The fifth round isn’t normally where you find your potential Pro-Bowlers, but Garvin could be an early contributor who pays dividends and sticks around in Philly for years to come.
The Philadelphia Eagles will be counting on their first and second-round picks to contribute in year one, but if the team can land a few mid-round players that find their way into a starting role early or, at minimum, become a huge part of the rotation at their position, this year’s draft, a very crucial one, will one day be seen as a huge success.
