3. Let’s compare Dillard to some other highly drafted tackles.

Here’s some fair warning. This next point isn’t encouraging.

Since 2009, a total of 42 offensive tackles were selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. Of that number, only seven non-injured tackles managed to start less half of their team’s games in their rookie seasons.

Since 2009, a total of 42 offensive tackles were selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. Of that number, only seven non-injured tackles managed to start less half of their team’s games in their rookie seasons.

That includes Andre Smith and Jason Smith in 2009, Gabe Carimi in 2011, Luke Joeckel in 2013, Taylor Lewan in 2014, D.J. Humphries in 2015, and Andre Dillard in 2019.

The names in the group don’t inspire much confidence. Lewan, drafted by the Tennessee Titans 11th overall in 2014, has proven to be worth the initial investment, earning three Pro Bowl nods in his six-year career. Andre Smith, Jason Smith, Gabe Carimi, and Luke Joeckel, are no longer in the NFL.
