The Eagles’ best cornerback tandem since Troy and Bobby?

Say what you want to say about Andy Reid’s drafts, those of Howie Roseman, and all of those free-agent signings. Every so often, this team comes up with the right mixture. Think back to the days when Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent roamed the secondary.

For all of his flaws, and there were many, Taylor was one of those things that former Eagles head coach Ray Rhodes got right. Taylor was one of the saving graces of an Eagles draft class that included Mike Mamula, who the Eagles selected over Warren Sapp, and the first of two Eagles selections in the second round (Barrett Brooks was the other and the only other guy from this draft class worth remembering).

Troy Vincent joined the Eagles via free agency in 1996, and he and Taylor formed a formidable duo for eight seasons. They were replaced by Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown, who the Eagles took in Round 1 and Round 2 of 2002’s version of the NFL Draft respectively. Brown and Sheppard held things down as the starting tandem for six seasons.

The “Birds” haven’t had that type of talent at both cornerback spots since. Now, with Darius Slay in the lineup, the mind wonders what it would be like to have someone like Joe Haden on the other side. It’ll never happen, but what’s that saying? “If your dreams are all easily attainable, you aren’t dreaming big enough”.
