Where does Sua Opeta stand with this Philadelphia Eagles team?

After earning two consecutive First Team All-Big Sky nods in 2017 and 2018, Sua Opeta joined the Eagles as a part of their 2019 crop of undrafted free agents. His NFL Scouting Combine showing was a little bit better than Herbig’s as Opeta threw up 39 reps on the bench press. That was the most of any offensive lineman that worked out in Indianapolis. Things like that tend to get you noticed. So does a six-foot-four and 305-pound frame.

With the “Birds”, Opeta was left off of the initial 53-man roster but added to the practice squad, where he spent 12 weeks before being promoted to the active roster during the last month of the regular season in the spot vacated by Mack Hollins, a man the Eagles could have and probably should have waived months earlier.

Perhaps that was because they believed in him. Maybe that was done out of fear. He was, after all drawing the interest of quite a few of the other NFL franchises, especially as the season wore on and injuries began to rack up.

The ceiling for Opeta could be a spot on the roster though it will be hard to evaluate him with an abbreviated camp and preseason. Whether Philly favors him or Herbig is a tossup, but here’s what we can say with certainty. They don’t favor either more than they favor Jason Peters. Keep an eye on the battle at the right guard position. There are a lot of interesting storylines here.
