Philadelphia Eagles: Their 5 worst receiving corps of their last 25 years
Chip Kelly’s unit in his final season (or 15 games) in 2015 with the Philadelphia Eagles comes in at number four on our list.
The 2015 season is something of an anomaly in the annals of Philadelphia Eagles’ history. It would be the last in the tyrannical reign of Chip Kelly. It closed the era of that 3-4 defensive scheme, and it meant we’d never have to witness his ‘revolutionary’ offense again (we use the term loosely).
2015 was a season where Demarco Murray, in essence, replaced LeSean McCoy and the team was led at quarterback by Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez. Those last two sentences are probably as wild to read as they were to type. As a matter of fact, the only thing positive that came out of Chip Kelly’s era was the addition of special teams coach Dave Fipp, tight end Zach Ertz, and right tackle Lane Johnson. Some might even throw Nelson Agholor in that group.
As far as Chip’s wideouts go, Bradford and Sanchez were slinging the rock to a quasi-talented group of a then-rookie Nelson Agholor, Jordan Matthews, who was in his second season, and Riley Cooper, who was one of the veterans in the locker room. As frightening as that sounds, it’s true.
The real veteran presence in the receiver room was Miles Austin, whose cameo season in the midnight green is often forgotten about. Former Oregon Duck Josh Huff also saw some playing time, but that was mostly in the return specialist role. Other random receivers who caught a pass in this very random season were Jonathan Krause and Seyi Ajirotutu. Do you remember them? We didn’t think so.
The reason we don’t have the unit from 2015 ranked lower is the efforts of Mathews. He had the best season of his career with 997 yards receiving and eight touchdowns, which is absolutely remarkable when you factor in who was tossing him the rock. Unfortunately, however, the 2016 season wouldn’t be pretty either.
