Philadelphia Eagles: Ranking 4 of Howie Roseman’s recent roster blunders
Philadelphia Eagles fans should have known we’d discuss draft picks.
Perhaps the loudest criticism of Philly’s vice president and general manager surrounds what’s believed to be his inability to scout and evaluate talent at the collegiate level, especially at the wide receiver position.
The jury is still out on JJ Arcega-Whiteside. Yes, D.K. Metcalf was taken after the former Stanford Cardinal standout, and he’s gotten off to a more explosive start with the Seattle Seahawks. Still, JJ’s failures were more about Carson Walch’s failures as a wide receivers coach than any limitation ‘JJAW’ had as a rookie.
However, we’d all be remiss if we didn’t mention Howie swinging and missing on Shelton Gibson, Donnel Pumphrey, Mack Hollins, and, possibly, Jordan Mailata and Sidney Jones. Philly’s first-round selection in 2017’s draft, Derek Barnett, has been the cause of worry as well.
Every year since 2018, we’ve said Barnett will have his breakout season. He never does. It’s kind of become a tradition, like when the Dallas Cowboys say every year that they’re going to the Super Bowl. Even still, Philly decided to exercise his rookie fifth-year option anyway. Some would say that move was made too early. Then, there’s the decision to take Jalen Hurts in the second round of the most recent NFL Draft.
Might he have been available if Philly waited until Round 3? Should they have gone the route of adding someone else who represents a larger area of need? Why would a team with so many needs take a quarterback in Round 2 knowing that they had Carson Wentz? Only time will tell, but until then, Roseman has developed a stigma.
He doesn’t seem to understand the process of scouting or adding talent. That’s why this team keeps reacquiring old guys that nobody else wants. That has to change and soon.
