team. 54. . . . Philadelphia Eagles. 1

Yes Philadelphia Eagles fans, your favorite team sits on top (for now).

This is not a mistake nor does it represent any bias. The Eagles deserve the top spot on this ranking heading into Week 1, and there are many reasons why. The ‘Birds’ are the only team in the division that didn’t make a change at head coach. That leads to consistency. Sure there are questions about this team’s draft strategy and how they manage the cap, but Doug Pederson has managed to thrive regardless of what’s been thrown his way.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman hasn’t led the best drafts, but 2020’s version looks good. Jeffery Lurie is also one of the game’s best owners. He definitely got the Pederson hiring right. In his fifth season in the ‘City of Brotherly Love’, Doug will arguably have the best wide receiver corps he’s ever coached. The team’s secondary seems solid. So does his defensive line, which features more than its fair share of players that can wreak havoc at the line of scrimmage.

Sure, the Eagles’ offensive line has a lot to iron out, but Jason Peters’ decision to move back to left tackle helps a ton. Carson Wentz remains at the helm on offense, and he should play better than he did last season. Without strong showings from his wide receiver corps, ’11’ threw for 4,039 yards and 27 touchdowns. Imagine what he could do with a revamped unit? Tight ends Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert will also be in the mix, so Wentz will have plenty of options.

The Eagles fragility at offensive line is a situation worth monitoring. One missed block could put Wentz in peril and re-write what’s going on in Philadelphia, but if the ‘Birds’ can protect their quarterback and if this team isn’t ravaged by the injury bug, they should have no problem keeping the top spot in this ranking all season. We’ll see how things play out on September 13th.
