2. If you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan, doesn’t it feel like Slay’s addition was just dumb luck?

All that has been said to say this. Is it fair to say that the Philadelphia Eagles G.M.’s best move in 2020 was more of a reactionary move than a proactive one? Doesn’t it feel like the Darius Slay deal happened by happenstance?

Think to the most recent free-agency ‘frenzy’. We thought Philly would pursue one of the top two cornerbacks on the market after moving on, finally, from Ronald Darby (yet another of their key players that they didn’t realize lacked talent until it was too late). We were even told on multiple occasions that they’d do whatever it took to bring Byron Jones to the nest.

Then, Byron Jones signed with the Miami Dolphins. Hey, that wasn’t a big deal right? Philly could go get the second-best guy, James Bradberry! Nope. They missed on him too as Bradberry signed with a division rival.

All of a sudden, Philly was desperate and didn’t have a ton of answers. What did they do? They went out and forced a trade to get Darius Slay. Now, Bradberry has been okay for the New York Giants, but as you know, Jones got hurt in Miami.

Then, there’s this. Slay might be better than both of those guys. Here’s a move Howie made that might work out, even if they did have to unload a boatload of cash and you might be able to make the argument that Slay’s deal keeps Philly from holding on to some other guys. Why? Again, Howie can’t draft (see Rasul Douglas and Sidney Jones).

The jury is still out on Javon Hargrave’s addition as is the case with Nickell Robey-Coleman, and after two games the evidence against ‘NRC’ is damning. Still, Slay might be the best addition that Roseman has made in a while. It just feels like Slay’s addition was more of a makeup date after screwing up so many dinner parties and movie nights so to speak. Slay wasn’t on Philly’s radar, but he is better than Jones and Bradberry. It’s just sad that Howie’s best move may not have even been planned. Won’t that help you sleep well at night if you’re an Eagles fan?
