3 Keys to a Philadelphia Eagles win versus Green Bay in Week 13
By Hunter Doyle
2. Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert needs to be more involved.
Last week, Dallas Goedert admitted that he did not run the right route when Carson Wentz threw the interception on fourth down. Bobby Wagner was playing with inside leverage and Goedert could’ve had a sure catch if he broke in the other direction. That was a rare mistake from Goedert though. He’s been one of the positives for this team when he’s been on the field.
In the six games that Goedert has played at least 80 percent of the snaps, he has 29 receptions for 331 yards and three touchdowns. He’s averaging the most receptions and yards per game of his career thus far. That includes numbers from the games versus Cincinnati where he only played six snaps and versus Dallas where he was mostly used as a run blocker in his return from injury.
It’s unclear how much Zach Ertz will play in his return to the lineup this week. His presence alone could draw some attention from Packers defenders. Their linebacker corps has not been that great in pass coverage and Adrian Amos can only keep an eye on one tight end.
As stated earlier, there have been issues for the linebackers and safeties in the box this year. The Eagles could have an opportunity to go 12-personnel the majority of the time if Ertz plays a decent amount of snaps. Ertz isn’t the best blocker, but he’s a better blocker than Richard Rodgers, Credit Rodgers for contributing in the passing game though.
Goedert is the best run-blocking tight end in the league. The Eagles can utilize him there and then go play action with him releasing off of blocks for big completions. Knowing Pederson, that’s unlikely to happen, but we can hope. Goedert has gotten in his groove these past two weeks but it would be even better if Wentz looked his way more often.
