Really take these last two in if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Here are a couple of things you may not know about Ryan Day and, believe it or not, Birds CEO and Chairman Jeffrey Lurie. Yes, the boss worked his way into this story.

2. Day is already familiar with the Philadelphia Eagles and their city.

Day also knows what it takes to coach in one of our great country’s toughest football towns and media markets as he served under Chip Kelly as this team’s quarterbacks coach in 2015. He also followed Chip to the San Francisco 49ers in 2016, where he served in the same role. Coach Day isn’t starved of NFL experience.

3. Jeffrey Lurie has a unique strategy when it comes to hiring coaches.

There’s something about Jeffrey Lurie’s scouting strategy if you’ve been paying attention. He isn’t a football guy clearly, even if he believes himself to be one, but he likes to think that he’s a guy that knows how to find that guy no one else is looking for. He’s never hired a head coach with any experience, at least not at the NFL level.

He grabbed Chip Kelly out of Oregon, but there was that question about whether or not Chip’s innovative offense would change the NFL. It didn’t, but Lurie still liked the idea of what we’ll call ‘out-thinking the room’.

Also keep in mind the fact that Lurie’s first hire was Ray Rhodes, who won the NFL’s Coach of the Year Award in his first season, and though he’s a future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee now, there weren’t many people who had Andy Reid on their radars. Big Red just knew how to do the job.

All that has been said to say one thing. Don’t rule out the possibility of Lurie going with a guy like Day. If Doug Pederson’s hire didn’t teach us anything else, it’s this. Jeffrey Lurie like the idea of finding that rare jewel among so many other diamonds. Keep an eye on the one hanging out in Columbus.
