The Philadelphia Eagles aren’t alone in falling asleep behind the wheel.

In 2010, Amaro was two years into his stint as being the general manager of the Phillies. Everything looked solid when the team went to the World Series in 2008 and would acquire all-star pitchers like Cliff Lee and Roy Oswalt.

Amaro was very loyal to that team’s core as Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, and Ryan Howard were all awarded lengthy contracts after their prime years were clearly over. Stop us when any of this begins to sound familiar.

Roseman has long stated that he gets emotionally attached to players. Think Brandon Brooks and Jake Elliott, two guys who have been given some pretty healthy contracts that are robbing this team of acquiring help at other positions. Why? It’s obvious. Those guys were key in helping the Eagles win the Super Bowl at the end of the 2017-2018 season.

The Ryan Howard contract came in 2010. he was given a six-year, $125 million dollar deal. The weird part of this deal, as NBC Sports Philadelphia points out is he still had two years remaining on a three-year deal that he signed the year prior.

The Big Piece wasn’t exactly lighting it up anymore, and with the injuries, the Phillies had a contract that was just taking up space with no way to move it. That same story also states that “no-trade clauses, vesting options, and pricy buyouts” were always popular items in Amaro’s contracts with the Phils, which didn’t help the team when they wanted to get rid of players.

That’s enough about contracts. Let’s talk farm systems and drafting.
