54. . . . Center. 5. player

One Philadelphia Eagles legend ponders retirement with every cup of coffee.

Eagles center Jason Kelce has been far more valuable over the last decade than he gets credited for being. He’s been the most durable and consistent player on the Eagles offense during that time. Very few fans are aware of how many responsibilities come with playing center. It’s one of the most cerebral positions in football and probably the most cerebral next to playing middle linebacker or quarterback.

Before snapping the ball, Kelce must scan the field and identify the D-line’s positioning, the linebackers, and the safeties. He must consider the field position, the scoreboard, player tendencies, defensive personnel, how much time remains in the game and do so all in a matter of seconds.

After the situation is processed, he’s responsible for calling out blocking assignments and making line audibles if necessary. Kelce does that on every snap of every game before the play even begins.

Kelce’s athleticism and blocking ability are the apparent skills for which he receives the most praise. Rarely are his line adjustments discussed in any way, but he’s the best player in the league at arguably the most undervalued position. Philadelphia could see a seismic decline in play at the center position once someone else takes over. As an Eagles fan, you hope they won’t, but Kelce is a tough act to follow.
