805. . . . Round 6: Shakur Brown, Michigan State. . player

The Philadelphia Eagles add some defensive insurance in Round 6.

Okay, we’re really rolling with that cornerback thing now. The Philadelphia Eagles land Shakur Brown in Round 6. There’s both good news and bad news with this pick though.

The bad news is he’s five-foot-ten and tips the scales at 190 pounds. Then again, that also means that he’s three inches taller and ten pounds heavier than Nickell Robey-Coleman. The good news is, if he was bigger and taller, he’d probably be ranked higher, so we can see there’s some natural ability there. This guy can ball, but he probably figures to settle in as a slot receiver at the pro level.

That’s okay. Philly can use one of those too.

If you need an Eagles and NFL comparison, think about former Birds cover guy Brandon Boykin, the 2013 version at least. That season, Boykin racked up 47 total tackles, two forced fumbles, and six interceptions. In 2020, Shakur Brown tallied 25 total tackles and five interceptions. This would be a nice acquisition for the Birds in Round 6.

A trusted NFL source believes the Philadelphia Eagles will earn a comp pick here.

Over the Cap typically does a pretty good job of forecasting whether or not teams earn compensatory picks and where they might be placed. They believe the Birds get a sixth-rounder after losing Jordan Howard. That’s good enough for us.

With that pick, they select an edge guy, outside linebacker/defensive end hybrid Shaka Toney from Penn State. He’s a six-foot-three, 252-pound nightmare. Guys are going to drop in this selection meeting. Toney may be one of them. If he does, and Philly lands him in Round 6, consider it a win for the franchise.

Update: OTC nailed it! The Birds got two comp picks in Round 6! With that being said, slot Toney as the 224th-overall selection. One pick later, at 225, the Birds take defensive end Chauncey Golston out of Iowa.
