Derek Barnett, defensive end. . player. 54. . .

Philadelphia Eagles fans will finally get that breakout from Barnett (we hope).

It’s gotten to a point that writers can literally pen something about this Philadelphia Eagles team, schedule it months in advance, and know that the story’s contents will still be relevant upon its release. In many ways, this team has gotten predictable.

Come on, you know good and well what we’re going to be talking about come the next draft: cornerbacks, wide receivers, and depth at the EDGE. You also know what’s about to be said about Derek Barnett. It’s been said every season since 2018.

Hopefully, this is 96’s breakout season. There it is again. Now, ask yourself a serious question. How long have you been saying that?

The only remaining member of a 2017 Eagles draft class that brought in eight guys enters the fifth year of his young career after Philly tendered him much earlier than they needed to. At this point, if you’re asking yourself what it’s going to take for this guy to reach his potential, no one would blame you, but come on.

Josh Sweat has come into his own. Tarron Jackson will be good if coached correctly. The question is this. Can Derek Barnett finally justify his first-round selection? The answer is yes. This is the breakout season. At least Eagles fans sincerely hope so. You have to say it. You have to believe it, and then, maybe it can happen.
