Darius Slay is 30 and Steven Nelson is 28, so the Eagles need to develop a cornerback. From the early noise out of Eagles camp, Zech McPhearson seems to be that guy. The fourth-round pick from Texas Tech has been showing up and showing out in practice. Getting his hands on the football more than any other defensive back in camp.

The cornerback position has been a revolving door since Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown left the building. If Zech McPhearson can become even an average cornerback, it benefits this team in a big way moving forward.

The Eagles won a Super Bowl with cornerback being a liability, but that was with Jim Schwartz at the helm. Schwartz historically never had great corners in his defense. Jonathan Gannon’s defense needs to have competent corners to be successful.

McPhearson’s development is important. Having draft picks hit early makes it where the front office does not have to spend cap space or draft capital on that position.
