Philadelphia Eagles wide receivers John Hightower and JJ Arcega-Whiteside

This time last season, John Hightower had a mini-buzz going as a fifth-round draft choice that could be a surprise standout in the Philadelphia Eagles offense. One year later, he’s staring up on the depth chart at DeVonta Smith, Jalen Reagor, Travis Fulgham, Greg Ward, and Quez Watkins.

For those keeping a tally, that obviously gives the Eagles five wide receivers on a roster that might, at most, carry six. Do they keep six? And, let’s say they do. Should the sixth guy be John Hightower or JJ Arcega-Whitside? Should the Eagles keep either one of them? You probably won’t hear a ton of arguments if they both were left off of the team.

Their existence evokes memories of past failures like Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson, guys who proved that they couldn’t hack it early but received too many chances and hung around far too long.

JJAW shouldn’t be given another chance. That has been established. The question now is whether or not it’s already time to give up on Hightower too. Successful arguments can be made to prove that it should be as this team is getting nothing from either guy.
