Philadelphia Eagles: 3 Things we’ve learned after NFL season’s first month
The Philadelphia Eagles have a slightly better quarterback than we thought.
It’s been a month, and though there were some rumblings early, there’s been no real sign of any quarterback controversy. Think about it. No one talks about Joe Flacco. There are times when it’s easy to forget that Gardner Minshew is on the team. We’ve gone from Carson Wentz versus Nick Foles and then Carson Wentz versus Jalen Hurts to Philly giving every indication that this is Jaken Hurts team, for now anyway.
Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie issued a decree in the offseason that he wanted his leadership structure to do all that it could to ensure Hurts’ success. Howie Roseman, in turn, drafted a former Heisman Trophy winner in Round 1. They’ve placed a premium on ensuring that there’s a veteran presence in the quarterback room with him, and we’re seeing some results.
Jalen Hurts was all-time bad versus the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3 (25 completions on 39 attempts, 326 yards, two touchdown passes, and two picks). Throw that game out and he’s 71 of 106 with 841 yards passing and seven interceptions versus zero interceptions.
Yes, his deep ball needs work. Yes, he has a lot to tighten up with his game, but here’s the truth. As of right now, it makes more sense to hang on to Jaen Hurts than bring in someone like Spencer Rattler. Trust us on this one. Philly can do a lot worse than Hurts.
