Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett

The Philadelphia Eagles could have traded Derek Barnett last offseason. They could have traded him this offseason. Philly did nothing, and now, it appears that there’s no hope for getting rid of him now.

Think back to the most recent offseason. We went from talking about guaranteed money that he would have gotten if he wasn’t dealt by March 17th this offseason to seeing Philadelphia do nothing, thus guaranteeing his $10 million salary. As if that wasn’t bad enough, now we have to watch him struggle through another season of bad football.

Yep, at some point, the Birds began to care more about being right than being good. Once upon a time, these guys didn’t get emotionally attached and moved on from guys a year early. Now, they consistently move on from expensive and underperforming players a year or two after they need to, but they make sure they pay these guys a king’s ransom before they do so.

Oh, that’s right. Andy Reid stopped making personnel decisions… Nevermind.

The point is this. This one’s a tough sell. Barnett is much more expensive than he should be and a personal foul penalty waiting to happen, but he’s a former first-round selection. That has to count for something. Keep your fingers crossed. Maybe the Birds can trick someone who’s desperate for pass rushers to take this guy off of their hands.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to have faith in that happening when we’ve watched this franchise mismanage the roster for years.
