. . . Derek Barnett, defensive end. 2. player. 54

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett

It might be a little silly to blame Genard Avery’s personal foul penalty on the fact that Derek Barnett has been flagged for so many, but both are further examples of a much larger issue. The Philadelphia Eagles are an undisciplined football team, and their coaches are behaving like substitute teachers.

There’s no accountability. There’s no real leadership. The players don’t seem to respect them as much as they should, and the coaches seem to be more concerned about offending their players than making them better. Raise your hand if hearing the excuses makes you want to rip your hair out.

Since Derek Barnett‘s arrival, this team has seemingly defended him at every turn. It began with his selection. What were they saying? ‘Well, he broke Reggie White’s sack record at Tennessee!’. Nevermind the fact that Derek appeared in 17 more games with the Volunteers than Reggie did, but that’s another story for another day.

The Eagles drafted eight players during 2017’s NFL Draft: Barnett, Sidney Jones, Rasul Douglas, Mack Hollins, Shelton, Gibson, Donnel Pumphrey, Shelton Gibson, Nathan Gerry, and Elijah Qualls. Four of those guys play for other teams now (Jones, Douglas, Hollins, and Gerry). Three of them are out of the league (Gibson, Pumphrey, and Qualls). The only member of that class that’s still a member of this Eagles team is Barnett.

You realize that draft was less than five years ago right?

There’s a way that Barnett can still serve this Eagles team, as trade bait. Milton Williams can play both inside and outside on the defensive line. Tarron Jackson has some ability. Josh Sweat is simply a better player. You do realize he got his extension before Barnett right? That should tell you all that you need to know.
