In a season that some thought was doomed before it even began, the Philadelphia Eagles seemingly have assured us all of something. Whether we choose to accept it and admit to it is another story entirely.

This is a bad football team, and with a difficult schedule to endure, some might venture to assume that, even though, in some circles, that there was hope, the reality is starting to set in. Those who prescribed themselves to the gloom and doom theories may have had this team pegged all along.

For those fans and the ones who have boarded the panic train as the season has moved along, the 2021-2022 Eagles season is nothing but a 17-game feeling-out process and the guide for where Howie Roseman and company should shop for talent in next year’s NFL Draft.

So, what’s going on with those first-round Eagles draft choices?

Most of you know this, but it bears repeating. In addition to the Eagles’ own first-round draft choice in 2022, the Birds also own the Miami Dolphins’ 2022 first-round pick by virtue of trading back in the selection meeting last season.

Also, thanks to the trade that sent Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts, Philly got two draft picks out of the deal. They received a third-round choice in the 2021 NFL Draft. They also received a conditional second-round selection in 2022.

That latter selection becomes a first if one of two things happens: Wentz needs to play at least 75 percent of Indianapolis’ offensive snaps, or he must play 70 percent of the snaps if the Colts make the playoffs.

If the season were to end today, Philadelphia, Miami, and Indianapolis would all miss the postseason, but that would mean the Eagles would have three first-round draft choices (Carson Wentz has played over 75 percent of the offensive snaps for the Colts this season).

That means the Eagles would be picking three times in the top ten. They’d own the second-overall selection (from Miami), the seventh-overall selection (their own), and the eight-overall selection (from the Colts). You can best believe that we’ll be dedicating a lot of our attention to this as Philly moves through the season.
