5 Philadelphia Eagles that won’t be back for another season in 2022
Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett
Stop what you’re doing for a moment, and ask yourselves a question. What’s the first thing that you think about when someone says Derek Barnett‘s name? Are you at ‘bust’ territory yet? Do you think about the personal foul penalties?
If you’re like most Philadelphia Eagles fans, it’s probably a combination of all of those things.
The order in which you think of them probably varies from person to person. Still, before we think about his strip-sack in the NFC Championship Game versus the Minnesota Vikings, his game-ending sack versus Andrew Luck in 2018, or the fact that it was Derek Barnett that recovered Tom Brady’s fumble in Super Bowl LII after Brandon Graham produced the greatest strip-sack in the game’s history, we think about Barnett’s blunders.
The only remaining member of the Eagles’ eight-man 2017 draft class, Barnett wasn’t dealt this offseason. That was a disappointment to many as was Philly’s decision to exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie deal back on April 18th of 2020.
Barnett has had his moments. We’ve mentioned a few of them earlier, but they’ve been few and far between. He hasn’t done enough to warrant the first-round draft choice that the Eagles invested in him. He definitely hasn’t proven that he’s worthy of an extension. Keep in mind the fact that Philadelphia gave one to Josh Sweat as opposed to giving one to him.
