Philadelphia Eagles: Regrading Howie Roseman’s 2018 draft class
The Philadelphia Eagles find a potential star in Round 7 of 2018’s NFL Draft.
When the final member of the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2018 draft class was selected, no one batted an eyelash. We were talking about a seventh-round draft choice that had never played football before, one by the name of Jordan Mailata.
And, get this. The plan was to take this six-foot-eight, 365-pound gentle giant and turn him into a football player. Seriously, do they even play football in Australia?
As if that wasn’t a strange enough theory, there was also something else working against Mailata. Philly had thrown their fishing lines into international waters just one season earlier to find a potential prospect, and the result was Adam Zaruba, a six-foot-five, 265-pound tight end prospect that the Birds added as an undrafted free agent in 2017.
So yeah, when they took Mailata, there were a few eye rolls. Then, we saw that clip of him playing rugby and carrying a few guys, and we thought that Philly might actually have something here.
The process has been long and tedious, but here we are. The seventh-rounder beat out the Eagles’ first-round draft choice in 2019, Andre Dillard. Now, that’s worth applauding.
Say what you want about Howie. Yeah, he’s been awful at times, but with the exception of the Matt Pryor selection, he aced this draft. Mailata’s selection is all the proof that we need.
If you grab a guy in the seventh round, and that guy turns out as Mailata has, that speaks volumes. Then again, on the other hand, Howie could have just gotten lucky. You guys can argue among yourselves about that one. Grade: A+
