The league is trending the way of the scrambler, and Jalen Hurts is keeping up.

The Philadelphia Eagles knew what they were doing by taking Jalen Hurts in 2020’s NFL Draft. Some thought he would play a Taysom Hill-like role. Some thought Hurts would be converted to wide receiver or running back and be used in run packages, but everyone knew that Hurts was a dual-threat quarterback in college. The theory was that could be scary if that translated to the NFL.

In Hurts’ first season, he was used in run packages until Wentz was benched. Since then, he has kept up with the league and is actually narrowly trailing MVP candidate Lamar Jackson in many stats. Let’s check out the comparison after Week 12.

Lamar Jackson: 2612 passing yards, 15 TDs, 12 INTs, 87.5 QBR, 707 RUSH YD, 2 RUSH TD

Jalen Hurts: 2435 passing yards, 13 TDs, 8 INTs, 83.9 QBR, 695 RUSH YD, 8 RUSH TD

As you can see, Hurts is right behind Jackson in many of the important stats and leads him in some of the others. If Hurts can learn to play at a more consistent level, then he will meet or even exceed what some top QBs are doing, but the Eagles may still decide to replace him after this season. By the looks of things, hanging on to him through 2022 seems to be more ideal. There’s some evidence that they probably need to stick with Hurts for next season.
