Eagles safety Anthony Harris

Three days after the Philadelphia Eagles made news by signing a former rival in an attempt to improve their pass rush, they threw the fishing line into free agency’s pool again and snagged former Vikings safety Anthony Harris, inking him to a deal that was even more robust than the one they offered to Ryan Kerrigan.

One year and $5 million dollars, about $4 million of which was guaranteed, were the specifics of a deal that meant Harris would be reunited with Eric Wilson, his teammate in Minnesota with the Vikings (Wilson signed on April 14th) in Philadelphia.

Most thought that the Eagles’ announcement of Jonathan Gannon as their new defensive coordinator had much to do with both signings. After all, Gannon coached Harris from 2015 to 2017 as the Vikings’ assistant defensive backs coach. Harris joined Minnesota in 2017.

Unfortunately, the Eric Wilson experiment didn’t work out. He was released on November 3rd and claimed off of waivers by the Houston Texans a day later. Harris’ tenure in Philly probably won’t extend past this season either.

He’s been decent. He’s tallied 58 total tackles and an interception in ten games so far for the Eagles this season, but in all honesty, he hasn’t done much that Philly couldn’t have gotten from a role player that they could have been given less money.

Expect the Birds to address the safety position in the next NFL Draft.
