Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Steven Nelson

Throughout the most recent offseason, after the Pittsburgh Steelers terminated their contract with Steven Nelson at his request on March 23rd, April passed and May went by without anyone adding him to their roster. You can imagine what people began asking.

If he’s that good, how come no one picked him up yet?

Finally, seemingly unhappy with what they had at the position, on July 25th, the Philadelphia Eagles pulled the trigger, agreeing to terms with Nelson on a one-year deal.

They had added Nate Meadors on May 14th. They drafted Zech McPhearson in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. They even traded another young cornerback, Jameson Houston, and a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Josiah Scott. In the end, Nelson won a starting role and the right to start opposite of Darius Slay during the 2021-2022 regular season.

Nelson has been okay. He hasn’t done anything to warrant an extension past this season though. The Eagles traded Zach Ertz to the Arizona Cardinals on October 15th for another young cover guy, Tay Gowan. They also got a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of the deal.

On November 2nd, they traded a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to the Denver Broncos for Kary Vincent Jr. There’s also Andre Chachere, who’s been here since September 2nd. There’s Mac McCain. Don’t forget about him.

Philly has a lot of young guys at the position and a slew of draft picks if they need to fill any holes. There’s no need to bring Nelson back after this season.
