December 30, 1995. 54. 50. . 58. . . 37

The Eagles hang 58 points on an overconfident Lions team.

Don’t adjust the screens on your desktops, laptops, or tablets. You read that correctly. Ahead of the Eagles’ December 30th battle versus the Detroit Lions, the guys from the Motor City were sniffing themselves some.

Wayne Fonte’s team was on a roll and entered the game at 10-6 thanks in part to a 4,000-yard passing season by Scott Mitchell and 1,500 yards on the ground by Barry Sanders. The Lions were road favorites. Then it happened. Lomas Brown guaranteed his Lions team would win.

Legendary Eagles sportswriter Ray Didinger said it best himself in a story for the team’s official website that he simply titled Didinger: Thank You, Lomas. Here’s a quote:

"I was assigned to do a story on Sanders but he was in the shower when they opened the locker room to the media. I saw a few reporters across the room talking to tackle Lomas Brown. I figured I’d listen in while I waited for Sanders. As I joined the circle around Brown, I heard him say: “Any oddsmaker who doesn’t pick us is doing himself a great disservice”. I had found my story. Thank you, Lomas."

No, wait… There’s more, and it gets better. Lomas’ exact words? Read them for yourself.

"There is no question in my mind that we’re going to win this game. It is just a matter of how much we are going to win it by and how long it is going to take."

The next thing you know. Detroit is in Veteran’s Stadium, and after the Lions and Eagles battled to a tie at seven points at the end of the first quarter. Philly hung 31 points on the Lions in the second quarter en route to a 51-7 lead and chants of “Lo-mas… Lo-mas… filled the air at Veterans Stadium.

The Lions would add 30 points in the second half to make the score more respectable, but the damage was done, and their hill was too steep to climb. With the win, Ray Rhodes had done what more beloved coaches like Buddy Ryan couldn’t do. He won a playoff game. The 31 points scored in the second quarter is still the most points scored by an Eagles team during any quarter of any playoff game.
