Ranking Eagles positional needs ahead of NFL free agency
The Eagles might look completely different at safety in 2022.
Philadelphia’s top two safeties are both impending free agents. Here’s what that means. If the Eagles decide against extending Rodney McLeod and Anthony Harris and didn’t do anything else, they’d walk into the 2022 season with K’Von Wallace and Marcus Epps as their starters, the only two guys they would have playing at the position.
No one wants to demean anyone, but having Wallace and Epps as your starting safety tandem isn’t ideal. Sure, McLeod might be brought back. The Eagles could elect to extend Harris. It’s doubtful that they hang on to both of them.
The coming selection meeting has some options: Kyle Hamilton (Notre Dame), Jaquan Brisker (Penn State), Jalen Pitre (Baylor), Bubba Bolden (Miami), Reed Blankenship (Middle Tennessee State), and Kolby Harvell-Peel (Oklahoma State). If none of those guys tickle Philly’s fancy, someone can be added a month earlier in free agency.
If the latter option is the move, there are most certainly some studs hitting the open market. Throw Marcus Williams, Jessie Bates III, Tyrann Mathieu, Marcus Maye, and Jordan Whitehead in that discussion. It will be interesting to see what route Philadelphia takes in the coming months.
