team. 15. . . . New Orleans Saints.

Could the Eagles reunite Gardner Minshew with his former head coach?

Roster and coaching turnover is a fixture of football at any level: prep, college, or professional. Guys are going to move along, and when people land in new spots, they’ll often ask people that they know to come with them. You noticed that Doug Pederson’s first hire with the Jags was of a former teammate, right (Mike Caldwell)?

Remember Doug Marrone? Sure you do! He led the Jags as, first, their interim head coach in 2016 and, eventually, as their head coach from 2017 to 2020. In his first season, he came within a few plays of rewriting history entirely. The Jags were this close to being the Eagles’ opponent in Super Bowl LII, but Tom Brady did what Tom Brady does, and well, you all know the story.

Things took a turn for the worse with the Jags after an amazing 2017-2018 campaign. Blake Bortles started looking like Blake Bortles again. The Jags signed Nick Foles, the only quarterback to ever lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl win, he got hurt, and Gardner Minshew was the next man up.

In the end, Marrone would lose his job as head coach after the 2020 NFL season. He’s since spent a year with the Alabama Crimson Tide before landing in his current role, the offensive line coach of the New Orleans Saints.

Marrone and Minshew’s connection could mean nothing. It could mean everything. Either way, keep an eye on the Saints. They could make some unconventional move to land a signal-caller, and Gardner’s name could be one that they toss around. It’s doubtful, but it could happen.
