4 ways Eagles can avoid disaster during 2022 NFL offseason
The Eagles absolutely cannot draft another wide receiver in Round 1.
Nothing says ‘disaster’ like what we’ve seen from the Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receiver position since 2016. We could close the argument right there, but we’ll elaborate.
Let’s just forget about the fact that this team experienced some financial crisis after they got locked into bad deals with Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor, and DeSean Jackson for a second (and the fact that they held on to them for one year longer than they needed to). Forget about those offseason additions that never panned out like Mike Wallace and the trades for guys that never made it to the field (Marquise Goodwin). Let’s just talk about how bad this team has been at drafting the position since Doug Pederson’s era began.
Since 2016, Philadelphia has drafted seven wide receivers. Two of those guys, Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson, aren’t on the team anymore (and Gibson is out of the league). John Hightower can’t get on the field (and when he has been on the field, he’s struggled to make plays consistently). Jalen Reagor… Do we need to talk about him?
The Eagles have taken wide receivers in the first round of each of the past two drafts. Despite the need to address other positions, there are mock drafts that suggest that one of their three first-round draft choices in 2022 be utilized on taking another.
Philly’s been linked to USC’s Drake London on several occasions. 94 WIP-FM’s Eliot Shorr-Parks suggested they reach on Penn State’s Jahan Dotson on another. Then, there was ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. He had Ohio State’s Chris Olave going to Philadelphia at 19 about a month ago.
Let’s settle this. The Eagles can’t draft a wide receiver in Round 1. They shouldn’t even be thinking about it. Anyone who disagrees with that need only look around this team’s roster at all of the other holes. If you still need evidence, you shouldn’t have to look any further than the lack of success they’ve had in evaluating the position. Any attempt to upgrade the roster should be exercised by fishing in free agency’s pool.
