Veteran free agents to eye, ignore for Eagles possible backup QB vacancy
By Hunter Doyle
Could Sirianni and Brissett reunite? This time as Philadelphia Eagles?
Veteran journeyman Jacoby Brissett will be one of the more popular names brought up due to his connection to head coach Nick Sirianni. After playing behind a stout Colts offensive line in previous seasons, Brissett had to adjust to one of the worst in the league this year during his time with the Miami Dolphins.
Per PFF, Brissett was pressured on 44.8 percent of his dropbacks but still completed 50 percent of his passes while under duress. A 50-percent completion percentage versus pressure might seem low, but that’s generally a good landmark when scrambling or throwing while being hit.
The frequency with which he faced pressure makes that number even more impressive. That’s why he was PFF’s highest-graded passer versus pressure for quarterbacks with a minimum of 100 dropbacks.
Also, he had eight passes dropped in those situations. Overall, he completed 62.7 of his passes and went 2-3 in his five starts. He won’t necessarily push the ball down the field but he also won’t put the ball in harm’s way too often.
Sirianni knows how to mold his system around the quarterback’s strengths and did so with Frank Reich when Brissett was the starter in Indianapolis in 2019. The outcome was far better than Brissett’s 2017 season as the starter before Reich and Sirianni arrived. The only problem is the potential price tag.
The Eagles have much bigger needs to spend on and Brissett is likely to be one of the higher paid backups this offseason.
