Philadelphia Eagles worst free-agent signings under Howie Roseman
Nnamdi Asomugha is one of the worst signings in Eagles and NFL history.
It’s hard to bring the hammer down on Howie Roseman for this one. Everyone wanted Nnamdi Asomugha… everyone, but this could be, not only the worst signing of Howie Roseman’s tenure as general manager, but also one of the worst signings made by the Eagles ever AND one of the worst free-agent signings in NFL history,
This one had it all: the behind-the-scenes bidding war, Philadelphia’s need at the position, the hype that surrounded Asomugha, and the expectation that came with his addition. When he arrived in the City of Brotherly Love, he had only tallied three picks between 2007 and 2010 because teams refused to throw in his direction.
It felt like the Eagles had hit a home run. Instead, they grounded into a triple play. Nnamdi got five years and $60 million in 2011. He’d be gone after two.
Asomugha started 31 of the 32 games that he appeared in. The Eagles didn’t make the playoffs in either season, and it was clear early that the guy that earned three consecutive Pro Bowl nods in the three seasons that preceded his decision to sign on with the Birds wasn’t worth the investment Philadelphia had made.
In a way, it felt like, whether this was the story or not, that he knew he had nothing left but allowed his reputation to earn him one more huge payday before Philly acknowledged their mistake and cut ties. Who knows, but after he and the Eagles organization were unable to agree to a restructured deal. Asomugha was released and spent three games with the San Francisco 49ers in 2013 before they waived him after a little over seven months.
Sheesh! Talk about a fall from grace.
