Is it possible for the Eagles to replace Rodney McLeod’s leadership?

Safety is a position where leadership is needed. Philadelphia must get younger here but the importance of a veteran like Rodney McLeod cannot be undervalued.

At this point in his career, he might be better suited to play in the middle of the field as a robber or as an overhang in big nickel packages. That way he can play in the box and help in the run. It’ll be a bit better for him rather than being asked to cover a deep third or deep half.

McLeod can certainly zone up and prevent yards after the catch in coverage or yards after contact on the ground. The occasional missed tackle will happen but overall he wraps up to prevent backbreaking plays.

Athleticism isn’t his calling card, especially after a pair of major injuries during his Eagles’ tenure. Yet, his IQ puts him in a position to make plays on the ball like he did to seal the win versus Washington in Week 17. McLeod can still contribute. It showed once again, especially in the back half of the season. He should be low-cost in free agency as well. The Eagles need to bring back the leader of their defensive unit.

Verdict: Bring him back. The Eagles can bring back McLeod on a team-friendly deal while still adding youth in the draft. He’ll be useful in three safety sets.
