The first round could have played out much better for the Philadelphia Eagles than it did.

The Birds land a future star for the defensive line’s interior and a stud veteran receiver who’s still young on Thursday, but you already know that, don’t you? Let’s discuss.

Jordan Davis, interior defensive lineman (Round 1, Pick 13)

The selection of Jordan Davis adds further fuel to a consuming fire. Said blaze seems to be engulfing Philly’s former base defensive package, the 4-3 alignment, so Jonathan Gannon can install a 3-4. Why else would Philly be adding all of these linebackers?

Davis is perhaps the 2022 draft class’s best interior defensive lineman. His college teammate Devonte Wyatt was no slouch either, but he was dropped from many teams’ big boards.

Jordan, the space-eater, will need to improve as a pass rusher. He might be a one-trick pony at this point of his development, but it’s a nice trick, and it always works. Final grade: A+

A.J. Brown, wide receiver (acquired for the 18th and 101st selections)

Okay, technically this wasn’t a draft choice. We have to talk about Brown though, right?

You can talk about the money if you like, but come on. In this day and age, you’re going to have to open the purse for great wide receiver talent. That’s just how the market has been set, and when he’s at his best, A.J. is a top-ten wide receiver. He’s also 24 and will enter the 2022 NFL season as a 25-year-old. His best days are still ahead.

We debated over whether or not the Birds would take another wideout in Round 1. They didn’t wind up with Jameson Williams, Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, or Treylon Burks, but they did get their hands on a former Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team nod (2019) and a 2020 Pro Bowler.

All it took was giving up the 18th and 101st-overall selections. That has to be considered a major win. Grade: A+
