4 big winners from the Philadelphia Eagles decision to acquire A.J. Brown
2022 could be a breakout year for second-year Philadelphia Eagles star DeVonta Smith.
It seems strange to call DeVonta Smith a second option, or WR2, or the ‘Y’ receiver, or whatever term you guys would like to use to identify the second wideout on the depth chart. Why? It’s quite simple actually.
DeVonta Smith isn’t anyone’s second option, theoretically anyway, so we won’t call him that. We’ll, instead, refer to him and his new compadre as WR1 and WR1a. How’s that sound?
Despite being only six-foot-tall and 170 pounds, the man formerly known as the ‘Slim Reaper’ bulldozed his way through a phenomenal College Football Playoff National Championship Game-winning season in 2020 (his second) and won the Heisman Trophy before the Philadelphia Eagles made him the tenth-overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.
As a rookie, he caught 64 passes for 916 receiving yards (the latter is a franchise record), and he found his way into the end zone five times. Now, think about something for a second.
He did that, and every opposing defense that faced the Eagles knew that this is one of the guys they had to stop. Can you imagine how much fun he’s going to have knowing that A.J. Brown will be on the other side of the formation to take some of the pressure off of him?
