. . Steven Nelson, cornerback. . player. 54.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ decision to move on from Steven Nelson ultimately led to an upgrade at cornerback.

Let’s get something straight. The Philadelphia Eagles’ decision to add Steven Nelson last season was absolutely and positively the right move.

He filled a need late. He was the best player available that the team could acquire at the time, and though there were many instances last season that demonstrated why he had stayed available so long, he wasn’t a total waste of Philly’s money or time.

Now, it also has to be mentioned that allowing him to walk was also wise. There were great options that were set to hit free agency’s pool. There were solid options that would be available during the NFL Draft. There was also another idea, and this was it.

If the Eagles failed to land a big-time free-agent corner during the initial stages of free agency, and if they didn’t add a satisfactory option during the draft, which wound up being what happened, the argument could be made that reacquiring Nelson late wasn’t a terrible idea.

Thankfully, the Houston Texans removed that temptation as they signed Nelson on April 14th, and after an interesting turn of events, Philly wound up with James Bradberry, a clear upgrade at the cornerback position from what the Eagles have had recently.

Nelson is solid, but Bradberry gives Philly someone that has Pro Bowl potential. Thank goodness the Birds weren’t in a hurry to make a decision. Their patience definitely paid off.
