If we rely on the eyeball test, Andre Chachere and Marcus Epps are the two Eagles safeties most ready to play an NFL game.

From Anthony Harris to Andre Chachere, the six-foot, 195-pound former San Jose State Spartan was an undrafted pickup by the Houston Texans in 2018. It’s been a long journey. He’s seen six locker rooms heading into his fifth season, but that winding road might end with a stop in the City of Brotherly Love.

If you didn’t know anything about Harris or Chachere and just relied on the eyeball test, you might think the latter was the starter. Harris hasn’t made many plays. Andre seems to make them constantly, and with two preseason games remaining, if Number 21 keeps this up, it’s going to be difficult to justify any arguments that end with any mention of the Birds leaving him off of the 53-man roster.

What more can we say about Marcus Epps? We’re beginning to run out of superlatives. This guy gets it.

While people doubt and spend their time mentioning everyone else, Epps packs his lunch pale, puts his head down, and goes to work. Some guys just need an opportunity, and the fourth-year safety has made the most of his.

39 games with eight starts (we’re including two playoff games) has led to 116 tackles, three interceptions, and nine pass breakups. In an expanded role, he should continue his upswing. If you aren’t a believer yet, don’t worry. You’ll come around soon.
