The Commanders are struggling on defense, but with the players they have, they can get into a groove quickly.

Chase Young sits on Washington’s PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list. No one wants to see anyone injured, even a rival, but it’s also a well-known consistency in a contact sport. Young’s absence gives the Eagles an advantage. Here are a few of his teammates that can shift momentum with a single play.

Darrick Forrest, safety

Darrick Forrest is tied for the team lead in total tackles with linebacker Cole Holcomb. He and Holcomb have 15 apiece. Washington’s talented safety has also contributed to the cause with an interception, a forced fumble, and two pass breakups.

William Jackson III, cornerback

Though the first two weeks of the regular season suggest an alternate theory, the Commanders do have some talent in the secondary. William Jackson III is a former first-rounder who will more than likely spend much of his day matched up versus A.J. Brown or DeVonta Smith or both.

Jonathan Allen, defensive tackle

It’s difficult to discuss the Commanders defense without making mention of Jonathan Allen. It’s impossible to win versus said defense without devising a strategy to limit and/or stop him. He also earned his first Pro Bowl nomination in 2021.

Daron Payne, defensive tackle

One of the members of a stellar group along the offensive line, Daron Payne is a space-eater who has seven total tackles, two pass breakups, and two sacks on the season.

Montez Sweat,

Jalen Hurts is, no doubt, very familiar with Montez Sweat. As a matter of fact, it was Sweat that forced a fumble by Philly’s QB1 in Week 15 last season. Ultimately, the Birds earned the victory anyway, but this is someone that the offense will want to keep tabs on at all times.
