Former Eagles that still owe Philadelphia a refund years later
It doesn’t get much worse than the Eagles’ decision to trade LeSean McCoy for an injury-prone outside linebacker who only lasted a year.
It was a sad time for a proud franchise. Chip Kelly took the reins as Eagles general manager in 2015, and couldn’t have done a worse job had he set out to do so. One of his many head-scratching roster moves was trading two-time All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for Kiko Alonso.
Alonso had only 16 games of NFL experience, and he missed his second year (2014) after tearing his ACL during a workout.
He had a solid rookie season with the Bills: 159 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and four interceptions in 16 games, and Chip Kelly in those days was trying to turn the Philadelphia Eagles into the Oregon Ducks. Be that as it may, Kiko began the 2015 campaign on the depth chart behind DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks.
He would only play 11 games that year. Yes, more injuries hampered him. 43 tackles and one interception don’t make up for the loss of Shady.
Let’s say this again. Chip Kelly traded one of the best backs in Eagles history for an injury-prone backup linebacker.
That isn’t Kiko’s fault. He’s guilty by association, but Chip Kelly and Alsonso still owe us a refund with interest for pain and suffering after this one.
