Top 10 best undrafted free agent signings by the Eagles
Greg Brown most certainly had a knack for getting to the opposing quarterback.
After playing three years at Kansas State, Greg Brown transferred to Eastern Illinois but had to sit a year because of the NCAA transfer rules at that time. Much has changed since then, hasn’t it?
He left leave school early but no one was interested in taking a chance on him, so he took on a construction job for two years but saw his lucky day come in 1981.
Brown bumped into his old coach from Eastern Illinois, John Teerlink, and with his former leader’s help, a few calls ended with one grabbing the attention of the Eagles personnel department. A tryout was agreed upon, and Greg made the most of his opportunity.
Brown put construction work in his rearview mirror. That turned out to be the best decision he made.
His first NFL season with the Eagles netted two fumble recoveries and seven sacks in 16 games. One of those fumbles was returned for a defensive TD. In the five seasons that followed, he earned another 50.5 sacks and five fumble recoveries in 73 games.
That includes 29 sacks during his best two seasons, 1985 and 1986. He finished his run in Philly with 57.5 quarterback takedowns. That’s the sixth-highest total in franchise history. Again… Not bad for an undrafted guy.
