The Philadelphia Eagles released wide receiver Johnny Wilson with an injury designation, but that didn't last long.
Philly will be bringing back Wilson after clearing waivers 24 hours after his injury. He will instead be placed on the Eagles' injured reserve list, effectively ending his 2026 season.
Wilson only had five career receptions for 38 yards and one touchdown, all of which came in his rookie season in 2024 after being selected in the sixth round. Last year ended the same way for Wilson after he tore his ACL and was placed on injured reserve.
Johnny Wilson is back with the Eagles, but is lost for the 2026 season
It's such a shame to see Wilson on the IR list for the second straight season. His durability problems are now recurring and could affect his career moving forward.
Philly could still release Wilson altogether and settle an injury claim if they wanted to go that route. Or they could keep him on IR this year and give him another shot at making the roster in 2027.
For now, the Eagles have to move forward with the wide receiver room they have, which is deep with talent. Wilson was competing with Darius Cooper and Elijah Moore for the final roster spot or two at wide receiver in training camp. Cooper and Moore have built quite the rapport with quarterback Jalen Hurts to earn their spot on the roster.
Wilson's 6-foot-6 size is going to be missed, but the Eagles can lean on another receiver to handle that type of receiver. Dontayvion Wicks has been the tall, possession receiver Hurts has trusted throughout training camp to the point that he is considered WR2 on the team's WR.
The Eagles will miss Wilson, but they are in a good position entering the 2026 season at wide receiver. They may still be figuring out who the top three receivers are, but the talent is so deep that it is making it difficult for them.

Philly is a few weeks away from the regular season and still has some big decisions to make before the Eagles face the Washington Commanders in the opener. Until then, the large number of wide receivers on the team are going to continue to battle it out until opening day kickoff against the Commanders.
