Training camp is a month away for the Philadelphia Eagles, and there’s going to be some intense battles to win jobs.
91 players are fighting for 53 spots, leaving room for error to be at an all-time low. The Eagles have a stacked roster with depth all over the place, which won’t make the coaching staff’s jobs that much easier.
There are six position battles at training camp that Eagles fans will have to watch out for that will be as intense as it gets. Here’s a look at each of them.
Six position battles to watch at Eagles training camp
QB2 – Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee
Neither Dalton nor McKee was really impressive during OTAs, as the backup job is only going to intensify at training camp. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said both were splitting reps, but most reports on both were not great. McKee still feels like he’s got the advantage at QB2, but this will have to be decided on the last day of camp.
Safety – Marcus Epps, Michael Carter II, Cole Wisniewski, Andre’ Sam, Kapena Gushiken
These were all the names that Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio mentioned in his press conference as to who could be in the running for the other safety job alongside Andrew Mukuba. Epps started in this defense last year and impressed Fangio, so if the Eagles don’t add another safety in the next two months, he should be the favorite to win the job.
RB3 – Will Shipley, Dameon Pierce, Elijah Mitchell
Shipley’s spot on the roster is not as secure as it used to be over the years, as now Pierce and Mitchell are nipping at his heels. Struggles in the kickoff return game have left Shipley’s future in question. Pierce could help in the return game, and Mitchell is a perfect fit for an offensive scheme he knows well from his time with the San Francisco 49ers, leaving Shipley with a lot of work to do in training camp.
TE3 – Grant Calcaterra and Johnny Mundt
Dallas Goedert and rookie Eli Stowers should be the top two tight ends on the depth chart, but it’s a matter of who is going to be the last man standing at TE3. Mundt was taking starter snaps in minicamp, leaving him as the logical choice since he is the blocking tight end that offensive coordinator Sean Mannion needs. Calcaterra has been with the Eagles for a while now, so he will lean on that to help him land the final roster spot.
EDGE – Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt
Hunt outplayed Smith last season off the edge as Hunt led the Eagles in sacks (6.5) and interceptions (three). Smith had his fifth-year option picked up in the offseason, but with the poor play in 2025 and his offseason arrest, things are not looking great for the former first-round pick. Both are going to get a ton of playing time in rotation, but whoever starts will get more snaps.

WR5 – Elijah Moore, Darius Cooper, Johnny Wilson
The top four spots at wide receiver are secure with DeVonta Smith, rookie Makai Lemon, Dontayvion Wicks, and Hollywood Brown. It’s just a matter of who is going to finish out the rest of the wide receiver room between Moore, Cooper, and Wilson. Cooper and Wilson might have a slight advantage with their work on special teams, but Moore is a veteran, so this position battle will get intense.
