Over two weeks into the search for a new offensive coordinator, and it doesn't appear to be going that well for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Nearly 10 candidates have withdrawn their names from consideration or taken other jobs. That might seem bad to the public since NFL fans weren't hearing all of this during the head coach search outside of the Cleveland Browns, but the Eagles don't seem to mind that this is going slowly.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter appeared on the network's show NFL Live and asked about giving an update on the Eagles' offensive coordinator search. Schefter said this is all okay for the Eagles and even added an interesting tidbit for fans to keep an eye on.
“They don’t appear to be in any rush…They have Nick Sirianni who always could call the offense if they can’t find somebody worthy enough to do the job.”
Would Nick Sirianni calling the plays be good for the Eagles?
The last time Eagles fans saw Sirianni call the plays was in his first year as head coach with Philly, when he and Shane Steichen both handled it. That responsibility eventually fell to Steichen, which helped him land the Indianapolis Colts job in 2023.
There wouldn't be many Eagles fans who want to see Sirianni take over play-calling, as they are unsure how well he would do the job. With all the drama surrounding the team, Sirianni's time would be better spent focusing on keeping the team from completely falling apart.
Many Eagles fans have been calling for a more experienced play caller to take over as offensive coordinator, rather than a Brian Johnson or Kevin Patullo situation. Bringing in someone who has done it before would make the process smoother and help build the team's trust.
Right now, it appears as though Sean Mannion and Jim Bob Cooter are the top two candidates for the job. While Cooter has offensive coordinator experience, neither of them has the play-calling experience that might lead Sirianni to take it over.

This was not the way the search was supposed to go for the Eagles, but this is how it is turning out after top candidates like Brian Daboll and Mike McDaniel were out. Eagles fans just want this situation to end and end in the right way.
