Blame goes in 1 direction after Eagles wasted great defensive performance on MNF

Blame Jalen and A.J.

When the Eagles needed their stars to step up and win a game, they instead chose to blow up and play their worst games of the year. Saquon Barkley gets a pass, but A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts should have to walk back to Philadelphia after such a lackluster effort.

And it's a shame because the defense played outstanding again. They held the Chargers to field goals after turnovers. Pressured Justin Herbert all night, taking him down seven times.

Adoree' Jackson added an interception, and the team also forced Herbert to cough it up. They kept the offense in it all night. All they needed was one lousy drive from this pee-wee level offense — and they couldn't get it.

Eagles' offense failed when they were needed the most

Hurts was atrocious tonight, arguably playing the worst game of his career. He went a paltry 21-40 for 240, with a career high four interceptions. He made terrible decisions all night, missed receivers badly, and apparently is afraid to run the ball anymore. And that takes us down that dark path again — wondering if it's time to sit him down. He ended the first half with one of the most chaotic and inept plays I've ever seen.

But if you think Hurts was bad, don't forget to save some rage for Brown. He burned whatever goodwill he had left tonight with easily one of the worst efforts I've ever seen.

Don't let the six catches for 100 years fool you. He made a business decision — reminding us older folks of Ricky Watters' infamous "For Who? For What?" quote — leading to an interception. He dropped what should have been a significant gain on the first throw of the game. Hurts also put one right in his lap in the fourth quarter — even if that was a terrible play call — that he again dropped.

I'm all set with hearing anything he has to say from here on out.

Barkley was right. This team's in-game effort is beyond repair, and frankly, a complete joke. Teams lose games. However, when the Eagles lose, they seem utterly incapable of making adjustments and figuring it out. The list of dumb coaching decisions is long tonight:

  • Throwing a quick out at the end of the first half instead of using the whole field and calling a timeout
  • Not running the ball to bleed clock and burn the Chargers' last timeout before kicking the field goal to go up 19-16
  • Choosing to put your defense back on the field for overtime when they just finished regulation
  • Not running the ball in the red zone in overtime, knowing you had four downs and over two minutes to work with

The coaching staff's low-level brain function remains an issue. And just running around the practice field yelling "laser focus" isn't going to cut it. Practice makes permanent. And outside of the defense, the rest of this team doesn't have a clue what they are doing or how to fix it. All they know how to do is say junk like this:
