The Philadelphia Eagles' fleeting chance at an NFC East title will only come to pass if some of their division rivals shoot themselves in the proverbial foot with an ill-advised trade. The Dallas Cowboys appear to be on the verge of doing just that amid their rumored interest in former Philly standout Josh Sweat.
ESPN is reporting that sources have connected the Cowboys to Sweat, who is currently languishing on the Arizona Cardinals. While Eagles fans may be a bit frightened at the possibility of a champion from yesteryear with a star on the side of his helmet, the player Dallas is angling to acquire is far from the one he was in Philadelphia.
The Cowboys have shown a willingness to overpay in trades on the defensive side of the ball, and moves for players like George Pickens and Joey Porter Jr. have already cleaned out the cupboard of available NFL Draft picks to trade. The Eagles didn't commit to Sweat, but Dallas might foolishly take that plunge.
Cowboys interested in trade for former Philadelphia Eagles EDGE Josh Sweat
Sweat has been marooned in Arizona, as he joined on a big four-year contract to reunite with ex-Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. While he put up a career-best 12 sacks in his first season with the Cardinals, Gannon was fired, and Sweat has managed just two sacks this season.
Pro Football Focus ranks Sweat 86th out of 113 qualified edge rushers in overall grade and 71st in pressures. He's not what he once was, and the Cowboys may fall into their usual trap of overpaying for someone based on their brand name and past history in the pros. Indirectly, the Eagles will benefit from that.
The Dallas Cowboys could regret trading for ex-Philadelphia Eagles EDGE Josh Sweat
The Cowboys may be better off letting their young tandem of Malachi Lawrence and Donovan Ezeiruaku figure things out. This Dallas defense is thin, and they might give up even more assets for a player who is very clearly on the proverbial back nine of his career.
The Eagles may be limping to the proverbial finish line right now, as Tanner McKee throwing to Makai Lemon is seemingly now the backbone of a passing game that was led by Hurts and DeVonta Smith weeks ago. However, they aren't dead yet, and any shot they have at pulling off a miracle run may be kick-started by one of their division rivals stepping on a rake.

Adding another expensive pass rusher in Sweat, one who does not fix their issues with stopping the run or slowing down high-end passing offenses, might be the self-inflicted wound that Dallas often imparts upon itself and the Eagles have historically been good at pouncing on.
