The moment A.J. Brown's trade was announced, Philadelphia Eagles fans knew the moment had come that DeVonta Smith was officially taking over as the number one receiver in this offense.
While it's been known for months now, to officially see it on social media that Brown was sent to the New England Patriots, it was an odd feeling for Eagles fans, as they are excited to see Smith step up into that role. Smith had a chance to speak to the media for the first time since the trade was made official, and he needed just three words to react to the news.
"Business is business," Smith said via The Athletic's Zach Berman.
DeVonta Smith understands it's a business and he's keeping it that way
Smith is in the zone as he always is. Whenever he speaks to the media, he is all about just focusing on the team and making it better.
He has certainly done that throughout his Eagles career with three 1,000-yard seasons in his five-year NFL career. While he has been the number two guy for most of that time, he now steps up as the number one receiver in the offense, but he isn't focused on that at all.
"I'm just going out there and do my job," Smith said. "Regardless of how you want to look at it — 1, 2, 3, 4 — however you want to look at it, at the end of the day, we all have jobs."
The Eagles are looking for Smith to be the number one guy, and he knows it, since it was reported that he reached out to other receivers to see how he can prepare for the role. In reality, Smith was arguably the number one receiver in the offense last year after going for 1,008 yards to lead the team, so he already knows how to do the job.

Philly can only hope that he's got the confidence to step in and fill Brown's old role with ease. With his skill set, that shouldn't be a problem at all for him.
