The Philadelphia Eagles made the move that needed to be made after a rough go at it for wide receiver and special teams returning Xavier Gipson.

Just before their Week 14 showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Eagles announced two moves to the roster, including waiving Gipson from the team. They also announced that offensive lineman Myles Hinton has been downgraded to being out for the Chargers game.

Gipson had just two receptions for six yards for the Eagles, while having 13 total returns on kickoff and punt returns. He had two fumbles in five games with the Eagles.

Hinton is still on IR with a back injury and is in the tail end of his 21-day practice window. He should be activated within the next week or so.

Gipson can't hurt Eagles fans anymore

The most disastrous play of Gipson's time was during the Eagles' 24-21 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, where he had a bad fumble on a punt return late in the fourth quarter to set Dallas up with excellent field position. Gipson ended up hurting his shoulder and has been out for the last two weeks.

There's going to be questions about why Gipson was signed in the first place. On 38 touches in his career, he has fumbled the ball 12 times. That stat should tell teams to reconsider signing him.

Stepping in for Gipson is Britain Covey, who just returned to the Eagles this season after a short run with the Los Angeles Rams before the season. Covey made his season debut in the Eagles ' 24-15 loss to the Chicago Bears, where he had a punt return for nine yards and a kickoff return for 22 yards.

The Eagles have more stability at returner with Covey winning his job back. Let's hope he doesn't put the ball on the ground.
