Eagles OTAs gave first warning about a failed offseason bet

This might not work.

This offseason saw a lot of moves being made by the Philadelphia Eagles with most not being super flashy before the draft, but enough that some conversations were being had.

The one that came out of nowhere was the Eagles trading for quarterback Andy Dalton, which threw the whole fan base off. It wasn't that they were upset about Dalton, as he is still a very good backup quarterback, but it brought some questions up about the future of the position.

Tanner McKee was involved in trade rumors throughout the offseason, but it appears he will be on the roster for the time being. All throughout OTAs, McKee and Dalton were splitting reps at QB2 to see which one would win the job. After seeing how Dalton played, though, Eagles fans may not be feeling too encouraged.

Andy Dalton did not exactly excite Eagles fans with his OTA performance

To put it lightly, it wasn't a horrible performance, but he could have played better. The media saw Dalton play more at QB2 than McKee, so Dalton got the short end of the stick with more reports and sightings of him not playing the best under the new offensive coordinator, Sean Mannion.

It does leave some questions about the Eagles at quarterback, as there is already stuff out there about Jalen Hurts and whether he'll even be on the roster in the next year or two. Rookie fifth-round pick Cole Payton is expected to sit back and learn for at least two years, leaving his role on the roster up in the air.

McKee could very well still be traded in training camp or at some point in the regular season if injuries occur. The Eagles value McKee, though, as they tried to get a second or third-round pick for him in the offseason. That shows that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman wants to have McKee on the team for as long as possible.

That leaves Dalton with an uncertain future in Philly. He could still be retained as QB2 or QB3 as Roseman opened the door to the possibility of all four quarterbacks being on the 53-man roster. More than likely, though, Dalton could be facing the possibility of being traded or cut during training camp if the team feels highly about Payton and McKee.

Dalton did not do enough at OTAs to prove that he is a lock to make the 53-man roster. Things can certainly change in the next two months, but if Dalton doesn't play well in training camp, he might get the boot.
