Breathe Philadelphia, he is gone and can't hurt us anymore. The Philadeplhia Eagles have released quarterback Andy Dalton, sources tell NFL insider Mike Garafolo.

Philly's nightmare quarterback situation with four quarterbacks is finally over, as Tanner McKee and Cole Payton will back up Jalen Hurts. Dalton had been the backup until his horrendous Week 3 against the Chicago Bears forced the Eagles to move him down the depth chart.

It's been an accomplished career for Dalton over the last decade-plus, but this season won't be one to remember after just one pass was picked off. Garafolo added that Dalton has a strong chance of returning to the team's practice squad. Regardless, it ends what has been Howie Roseman's most unusual mistake.

Howie Roseman admits his four QB mistake after Eagles release Andy Dalton

Roseman and the Eagles tried to be stubborn about the quarterback situation for as long as they could. He wanted to keep all four quarterbacks on the roster because he liked them all, but it really left the Eagles in a bind at multiple positions.

Entering the season, the Eagles only had three safeties and four inside linebackers, not giving them enough to work with on defense. This decision at quarterback resulted in them losing key players like Cameron Latu, who would have been great for the practice squad.

As the weeks went on and injuries mounted, fans begged them to drop one of the quarterbacks to make room for other guys. Then the Dalton disaster in the Windy City happened, and it only intensified Eagles fans' frustration.

The Eagles really bit the dust in the worst way in their Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams when Lane Johnson was ruled out for a personal matter. That left the team with three quarterbacks active and two open spots, but they didn't have enough players to fill them.

Now, with Johnson's retirement, Cam Jurgens' trade, and multiple injuries, Roseman had no choice but to release Dalton. He provided little value to the team after completing just 51.4% of his passes in the preseason and playing a key role in the Eagles' loss to the Bears.

If Roseman really wants to add Dalton to the practice squad, he is more than welcome to. Not many Eagles fans will complain about that because it means he's still far from playing.

This move now opens up the possibilities for the Eagles to add players like Carson Steele, Jake Majors, and Zach Ertz from the practice squad to the active roster. Adding those players to the 53-man roster will only make the team better, and they can help out in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5.

Hopefully, this is a lesson for Roseman: don't carry four quarterbacks anymore, and make sure he's at hash depth everywhere else. It's an odd chapter to finally close and move on from for the Eagles fan base that is over Dalton.
