NFL roster cutdowns are happening across the league, and the Philadelphia Eagles have been a bit slow to start as they figure out who to keep.
All 32 teams need to have 53 players on the roster by 6:00 pm EST on August 30. So far, many players are already available for the Eagles to consider, and they're also making themselves available.
The Eagles could look at a few players from the first wave of releases who might be good fits for the practice squad or even the 53-man roster. Here are the newly free-agent players the Eagles could take a look at.
Which players cut early from NFL teams could help the Eagles in some way?
Elijah Cooks, WR (Previous Team: Carolina Panthers)
Some Eagles fans might remember Cooks from training camp last year, but he was ultimately cut. He made some highlight moments in camp, but everyone was mesmerized by Darius Cooper. Cooks might be a better fit on the practice squad, as he is a solid receiver who could still contribute to the team.
Kyon Barrs, DT (Previous Team: Carolina Panthers)
Adding another Panther on the list, Barrs has had success in the UFL over the last two seasons and got caught up in the depth at defensive tackle for Carolina. The Eagles could add another defensive tackle to the practice squad, and Barrs could be a solid run-stopper Philly might want to consider adding.
Adrian Martinez, QB (Previous Team: San Franciso 49ers)
After a very shaky training camp for the Eagles quarterbacks, it may not be a bad option to add one to the practice squad. Assuming something might happen with Tanner McKee or Andy Dalton via trade or release, Martinez could be an interesting fit for the Eagles. He knows Sean Mannion's system from working with Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco and is an athletically gifted quarterback. It may be good to have someone with experience on the team in some capacity.
Tra Fluellen, S (Previous Team: Green Bay Packers)
The Packers, in general, might be a team the Eagles could look at for offensive players since offensive coordinator Sean Mannion knows most of them well, but they have a defensive player who could help. Fluellen had a good season in the UFL for the Dallas Renegades, which earned him a shot with the Packers. He's a gifted playmaker who could provide some depth for the secondary on the practice squad for the Eagles. It feels like a good fit for a unit that needs as much help as possible.

Alex Austin, CB (Previous Team: Miami Dolphins)
Austin could make the 53-man roster, as he previously worked under Eagles secondary coach Mike Pellegrino when both were with the New England Patriots. During his NFL career, Austin has eight pass breakups, two tackles for loss, and one interception to highlight the stat sheet. The Eagles' secondary has struggled in the preseason, so Austin would provide valuable cornerback depth
