It was a breath of fresh air to see Sean Mannion as the Philadelphia Eagles' new offensive coordinator after dealing with Kevin Patullo last season.
Despite Mannion having no play-calling experience, he brings in a brand new scheme that is more modern and will open the offense in ways Eagles fans have dreamed of seeing for years. While discussing the offense in 2026, Sports Radio 94 WIP host Spike Eskin wants to see a dramatic change in the offense this season, but former Eagle Ike Reese talked him down with real expectations.
"This is what I've been sort of cautious of the entire time. Once they decided to move off Kevin Patullo and go with Sean Mannion, everyone on the outside wants this new offense, wants these new ideas, and wants things to be completely different than what they saw last year. Last year. I understand that in theory, but in practicality, I don't know how realistic that truly is. You certainly aren't going to hit the ground running with that from the, from, from the, uh, start of the season. It's just not going to happen. We've seen these offensive players have to find their way through offenses, new terminology, new ideas, all those things, starting with the offseason, in the training camp, into the regular season at times, where it takes them a while for before they really have ironed out all the kinks in this thing to where they can at least operate with efficiency and have some form of an identity. I don't expect it to be any different this year."
Should Eagles fans calm expectations for big changes with the offense in 2026?
Something has to change with this offense after finishing in the bottom 15 in all major offensive statistical categories, including passing, rushing, total offense, and points. Patullo was so conservative with his play-calling, running on first and second down and then going with hitch routes on third down.
Mannion is expected to jump in this season and, with the changes, get this offense back on track. His new scheme will include more motions and RPO calls that will throw defenses off and keep the offense unpredictable. He will also attack the middle of the field with more passes thrown in that direction instead of the outside all the time.
A lot of it will depend on how quarterback Jalen Hurts can handle it as well. If he can learn the offense fast enough, that will open things up right away. But if this thing takes time with him, it could be a long season.
Part of the problem is that Eagles fans want this offense to start fast, and that just hasn't been the case over the years with the new play calls from Brian Johnson to Patullo. Even with Kellen Moore back in 2024, the team started 2-2, and the offense was not 100% in sync until Moore adjusted in the bye week and started running the ball with Saquon Barkley more.

This offense won't get fixed overnight, and it's going to take time for the Eagles to figure it out even in the regular season. It's all about how they look in December and January when the games matter the most.
